Email scam tells people they’re expected in court February 1, 2014 Regular News Email scam tells people they’re expected in court Another ruse threatens arrest for shirking jury dutyAn email scam alleging “illegal software use” has been reported in other Southern states, including Georgia, that says recipients are expected to appear in an unspecified state court.“Anyone receiving such an email in Florida should not open any attachments or click on links in the emails,” said Craig Waters, director of public information for the Florida Supreme Court. “A notice about upcoming court appearances in Florida would not be given to state residents in this manner.”In Louisiana, Waters said, these emails have impersonated the domain names of well-known law firms and may contain an attachment, supposedly a court notice or summons, or may contain a link to a website. Some reports say that the attachment or link may download a virus into the user’s computer or device. The attorney general of Louisiana reportedly has launched an investigation. Juror Scam In various parts of the United States, citizens are being targeted by phone calls and threatened with prosecution for failing to comply with jury service in federal or state courts, according to a warning posted on the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida’s website. In the calls, the threat of a fine for shirking jury service is used to coerce those called into providing confidential data, potentially leading to identity theft and fraud. These calls are not from real court officials, the court said.“Federal courts do not require anyone to provide any sensitive information in a telephone call,” the court said. “Most contact between a federal court and a prospective juror will be through the U.S. Mail, and any phone contact by real court officials will not include requests for Social Security numbers, credit card numbers, or any other sensitive information.”The court said it is a crime for anyone to falsely represent himself or herself as a federal court official. The federal judiciary takes seriously such an offense. Persons receiving such a telephone call should not provide the requested information, and should notify the clerk of court’s office of the U.S. district court in their area.

Western Europe will continue to rely on imported Russian gas into the 2020s as mature offshore provinces struggle for growth, while large-scale shale gas extraction looks increasingly unlikely in the medium term, Douglas Westwood said in its DW Monday report.Johan Sverdrup field in NorwayFollowing Moscow’s intervention in Ukraine and the resulting strained diplomatic ties with the West, it remains to be seen if North Sea production can rally to support any drop in gas flow from Russia. With many IOCs planning investment into UK offshore fields through enhanced oil recovery (EOR), deeper water plays and downstream infrastructure upgrades, our Development Drilling & Production Forecast predicts that production will rally slightly to around 1.75 million b/d by 2017, requiring a maintaining of the recent 6% jump in well completions. The necessary high levels of expenditure are unlikely to be sustained in the long-term due to the UK’s offshore maturity; therefore, DW expect a resumption of decline towards the end of the decade. Hope for any long-term growth rests with much-needed reform of the UK’s offshore regulator, which must swiftly adapt to the shift towards production from smaller fields. On the other side of the North Sea, Statoil is to attempt improved recovery from brownfield projects offshore Norway. Along with the start of projects in the large Johan Sverdrup and Goliat fields, this will see the number of well completions sustained at around 200 a year beyond 2020. DW expect these projects will see Norway break from the mould of other mature Western European producers and sustain production into the next decade. It must be noted, however, that both of these fields are currently subject to delay. Johan Sverdrup is facing electrification issues whilst ENI’s Goliat FPSO is still to be completed and may take millions of man-hours more.Potential risks to future growth include rising costs and the potential (albeit currently small, and in the longer term) competition from shale gas production. A recent victim of rising costs was the subsea compression project at Ormen Lange, despite positive results during testing and the backing of Statoil and ExxonMobil. Recent onshore legislation changes in the UK now allows for drilling and pipeline construction under private property. This, along with growing encouragement from Westminster of E&P companies, shows that shale gas extraction could be possible on a larger scale towards the end of the decade. 28 February 2008Since the adoption of “biotech” crops in 1996, the amount of genetically modified (GM) maize, soya bean and cotton planted in South Africa, in terms of area planted, has increased to 1.8-million hectares.“White GM maize totalled 1.04-million hectares, an increase of 48% over 2006/07, representing a market share of 62%,” Agri-SA president Lourie Bosman said on Wednesday. “Yellow maize increased from 528 000 hectares to 567 000 hectares, up 7%.”He said the figures were indicative of the increasing confidence thousands of South Africans and emerging farmers had in crop biotechnology, with just over half of the maize produced in South Africa being genetically modified.GM crops are engineered to withstand environmental factors such as drought, with a dominant trait having been seeds with herbicide tolerance, allowing farmers to make use of herbicides without harming their crops.South Africa produces GM crops, non-GM crops and organic crops. However, the choice of what type of crop to plant is still in the hands of the farmer.“Agri-SA is positive about genetically modified agricultural crops and is enthusiastic about the contribution they can make in the future towards increased production,” Bosman said. The cumulative value of GM maize at farmer’s price totalled R21.63-billion, he said, adding that cumulative GM maize produced was 14.67-million metric tons, with the added benefit from a 10.6% yield increase over nine years amounting to an estimated R2-billion‘No adverse effects’“This maize has been consumed, in one way or another, every year by 40-million South Africans without any substantial medical or scientific adverse effects to humans, animals or the environment,” Bosman said. The most popular GM trait in South Africa was Bt insect resistant maize, with 1.1-million hectares planted, followed by RR herbicide tolerant maize, with 373 000 hectares planted. Stacked traits Bt+RR sales commenced in 2007 and 80 000 hectares have been planted to date.Field trials of drought-resistant maize varieties – a trait that has since been incorporated into other crops as well – are already under way in South Africa, and the technology is expected to be commercially viable by 2011.According to International Service of the Acquisition for Agri-Biotech Applications (ISAAA) chairman Clive James, the global adoption of biotech crops recorded an impressive 12% growth in 2007.Some 12-million farmers in 23 countries on six continents planted 114.3-million hectares of GM crops, with about 90% or 11-million of these farmers being resource-poor farmers in 12 developing countries.Bosman said he was satisfied that GM crops were helping emerging farmers to farm in difficult circumstances around the world, anticipating that the number of countries adopting the use of biotech crops would double by 2015, with use by over 100-million farmers. In addition, Burkina Faso, Egypt and Vietnam most likely to approve biotech crops in the near future.Source: BuaNews
