High Court strikes down black cab appeal against Uber’s London licence

first_imgThe dismissal is the latest in a series of events set into motion by Transport for London’s (TfL) decision to not renew Uber’s operating licence in September 2017 on the basis that Uber had misled TfL about its booking process and showed a lack of responsibility for public safety.Read more: Lyft to pitch fast growth to investors as IPO race with Uber intensifiesA month later, Uber appealed to Westminster Magistrate’s Court, where it was heard by the chief magistrate in late June 2018.After finding that Uber “had changed a number of its working practices and its governance”, Arbuthnott granted a 15-month licence to Uber so that TfL could “check the results” of the changes.Uber’s licence to operate in London is set to expire in September this year. Productivity improvements boost Canadian agriculture: BMO

Do investors understand their fees, portfolios? Canadian Press Facebook LinkedIn Twitter Keywords Investment research Share this article and your comments with peers on social media Canadian DB plans returned 9.2% in 2020: report Related news Thematic funds thrived during pandemic, but watch long-term performance: report Canada enjoys a large and growing surplus in agriculture trade, thanks largely to continuing improvements in productivity, according to a report Friday by the Bank of Montreal (TSX:BMO). Meanwhile, rapid economic expansion in emerging markets is both offsetting declining demand from the United States and adding to the diversification of export markets, BMO Economics said in an upbeat assessment. It said the industry should show steady growth in production again this year following a good harvest by farmers last year. However, bank economist Aaron Goertzen noted the potential impact of a stronger U.S. crop this year. “As drought conditions in the U.S. subside, increased production there could lead to lower agricultural prices,” Goertzen said. “Export demand growth will, as a result, be even more crucial for industry prices and profitability.” Bank agriculture manager Karl McLaren said that while some producers in Central Canada faced challenges due to drought, improved demand and increased production led the sector to solid revenue growth in 2012. “These factors, along with ongoing technological improvements, continue to have a positive impact on the agricultural sector,” McLaren said. BMO said improvements in technology and management practices and industry consolidation have resulted in sustained productivity growth over the years, with gross output per hectare having more than quadrupled over the past half-century. “There are few signs that innovation is slowing, with private spending on research and development in the agriculture sector having grown at roughly twice the pace of the Canadian total over the past decade,” it said. At the same time, growth in global demand has significantly increased agricultural product prices over the same period. “Long-term demand growth is virtually guaranteed by domestic and global population growth as well as rapidly increasing incomes in emerging market economies,” the bank said. read more

Railway stations across Adelaide in line for much-needed makeovers

first_imgRailway stations across Adelaide in line for much-needed makeovers Railway stations right across metropolitan Adelaide are set to receive much-needed makeovers as part of a $111 million commitment (over 10 years) from the Marshall Liberal Government in the 2021-22 State Budget ($66.4 million over the forward estimates).Fifteen stations along the Gawler Line, as well as other stations across the network, will be upgraded providing a more enjoyable and safer journey for Adelaide train commuters and supporting 110 full time jobs at construction peak.Premier Steven Marshall said the funding will help to encourage more people to leave their cars at home and catch public transport.“We saw, under the former Labor government, public transport patronage dwindle to embarrassingly low levels,” Premier Marshall said.“My government is getting on with delivering not only the long-awaited and much-anticipated electrification of the Gawler Line, but also desperately needed upgrades to our rail infrastructure.“We know that if we can get more people onto our buses and trains it will help to ease traffic congestion on our roads and reduce the impacts on the environment.“Our Budget for a stronger South Australia is creating jobs, building what matters and delivering better services to further secure our state’s growing global reputation as one of the safest and most attractive places in the world to live, work and raise a family.”Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Corey Wingard, said the upgrade works will include new shelters, seating and bins, lighting upgrades, painting and landscaping.“The stations on our train network were left to go to wrack and ruin under the former Labor government which no doubt had an impact on the number of South Australians using public transport,” Minister Wingard said.“This investment in a Station Refresh program will complement the extensive cleaning blitz the new rail operator Keolis Downer has undertaken across the network.“The Marshall Liberal Government was elected to deliver better services and that is why we’re investing in our public transport network – to deliver better and more frequent train services.”Stations to be upgraded between 2021 and 2025 include:14 stations along the Gawler Line ($20 million 50:50 with the Commonwealth Government)Ovingham Railway Station ($10 million) (also on the Gawler Line but funded separately)Woodlands Railway Station ($1.5 million)Ethelton Railway Station ($5 million)Adelaide Railway Station ($6.4 million)Goodwood Railway Station ($5 million) /Public News. Nayati Healthcare launches Nayati Organ Donation (NOD) programme

first_img Heartfulness group of organisations launches ‘Healthcare by Heartfulness’ COVID care app Menopause to become the next game-changer in global femtech solutions industry by 2025 Read Article Nayati Healthcare launches Nayati Organ Donation (NOD) programme Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals releases first “Comprehensive Textbook of COVID-19” Phoenix Business Consulting invests in telehealth platform Healpha Share Ramdas Athawale, Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment unveiled programme, in presence of Members of Rotary Club, Organ Donation India FoundationNayati Healthcare launched the Nayati Organ Donation (NOD) programme, an initiative to educate and raise awareness around the importance of saving lives, by pledging organs. The programme aims at reaching out to over 1 million people at the grassroot level in a period of two years. Ramdas Athawale, Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment unveiled the programme, in presence of Members of Rotary Club and Organ Donation India Foundation.Athawale speaking in his poetic demeanor, lauded Nayati’s efforts of taking quality healthcare closer to people. He said “I am happy to be part of the Nayati Organ Donation (NOD) programme, I am sure through the initiative, Nayati will reach out to people across different sections of the society, educate and empower them to participate in the noble cause and thus strengthen the nation.”Talking about the initiative, Niira Radia, Chairperson, Nayati Healthcare said “The Nayati Organ Donation (NOD) programme is an initiative very close to my heart. Every day we witness precious lives being lost for the need of organs, the situation is more acute in this region where people struggle with chronic organ diseases, and most of the times are not even aware of the magnitude of their condition. Nayati Healthcare performed the first kidney transplant in the region. We have been relentlessly working towards making transplant treatment services within the reach of the masses and will soon be launching our heart and lung transplant programme.India is witness to huge disparity between the number of transplants awaited, and the organs available. In 2017, 4 lakh people pledged, out or which only 13,000 people donated their organs. The condition is no different for blood donation where India faced a shortage of 1.9 million units in 2016-2017. The need of the hour is for us to adopt the ‘opt-out’ scheme, thus raise organ donation rates.”She further added, “The idea behind the Nayati Organ Donation (NOD) initiative is to bring about a change in the perceptions and foster a culture of organ donation. Each one of can save up to eight lives and that is the best legacy for us to leave behind.I would like to express my sincere gratitude towards Ramdas Athawale for extending his support to the cause. A simple NOD can go a long way in saving lives.”Nayati Healthcare plans to connect with over one million people in the next two years through a multilayered approach. SIA chairman optimistic on sugar crop

first_imgRelatedSIA chairman optimistic on sugar crop RelatedSIA chairman optimistic on sugar crop FacebookTwitterWhatsAppEmail Executive Chairman of the Sugar Industry Authority (SIA), Ambassador Derrick Heaven says while it is still unclear what impact the recent flood rains will have on the upcoming sugar crop, it is estimated that 150,000 tons of sugar will be produced and that all sugar factories, except for Long Pond, will be in operation.“What was known is that before the flood rains the cane supply looked as if it would be significantly more than last year. To what extent the flood rains have affected it, we don’t know for sure. Preliminary tests at some estates show that we may be pleasantly surprised,” Ambassador Heaven told JIS News. The Chairman also acknowledged that some farmers may be concerned as to the impact that the flood rains could have on the quality of the cane juice and thus on the payment they will receive for their crop.Ambassador Heaven is in London attending meetings of the International Sugar Organisation. He said a better estimate for the crop year will be known in a few weeks time, and indications are that all factories have completed their usual maintenance schedule with the exception for the Long Pond factory in Trelawny, which closed for major refurbishing and retooling. The Chairman said farmers who normally supply cane to Long Pond, and the estate cane will be now trucked to the Frome Factory in Westmoreland, and that this will not be an additional cost to the farmers. PM Pledges Tight Fiscal Policy

first_imgFacebookTwitterWhatsAppEmail Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Portia Simpson Miller, has assured the local and overseas business community that her administration will pursue a tight fiscal policy, reduce the country’s debt to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) ratio, and maintain the key macro-economic fundamentals. She has also emphasised that the newly elected government will be “very careful and prudent” in its debt management. “We will do all of this while seeking to improve the social conditions of our people, including a serious reduction of the chronic state of unemployment in this country, particularly among our young people,” Mrs. Simpson Miller stated. The Prime Minister made the commitment in her inaugural speech at King’s House today, where she was installed as Prime Minister for the second time. Mrs. Simpson Miller is the nation’s 7th Prime Minister. She also assured that the government will work with anyone, who is prepared to do so in Jamaica’s interest, and who shares the vision that people must be at the centre of development. “Our investors, including foreign direct investors, must contribute to making Jamaica a truly competitive economy. Now, more than ever, we must also make it easier to do business in Jamaica. Investors demand no less, and our future social and economic prospects depend on it,” Mrs. Simpson Miller stated. The Prime Minister further told the nation that her administration will ensure greater openness in government and frankness in its relations with the international community. “This candidness will also be seen in the meetings of Parliamentary Committees, which Members of the Opposition will continue to chair; and, to which the media and the public will have full access,” she stated. The Portia Simpson Miller–led People’s National Party (PNP) defeated the then governing Jamaica Labour Party at the polls in the December 29 General Election, claiming 42 of 63 seats. Before joining the GSMA, Joseph was group editor for Telecom Asia for more than ten years. That ratio is up from 65:35 in China and 80:20 in the US when AppLovin first estimated the split in November. The 6 Plus is growing in popularity in China, AppLovin said, but it’s starting to plateau (see chart below, click to enlarge).Applovin_DaytoDay_ChartThe market share of the 6 Plus is important because Morgan Stanley estimates that the profit margin of the 5.5-inch device is as much as 61 per cent higher than the iPhone 6’s margin. In addition, China reportedly was the largest iPhone market in Q4, outstripping shipments in the US for the first time. These two factors could significantly impact Apple’s earnings. The company reports its Q1 results next week.AppLovin said the increase in the ratios towards the Plus are significant since the new ratios aren’t just based on new sales, but on all iPhone 6 units in the market. It said that because the original devices sold in the first couple of months at a 65:35 or 80:20 (US) pace are still active, the new devices added have to dilute the original ratios, so the ratio of new iPhone 6 models now being sold in China is likely closer to 55:45 (6:6 Plus). In Hong Kong one mobile operator told Mobile World Live that the sales ratio between the two models is close to 50:50, but now leaning towards the Plus.AppLovin tracks usage to estimate the device ratio and doesn’t measure unique devices.
